Herschell to leave Upland Police Department

Department searching for replacement

Police Marshal Andy Cassidy announced at Upland’s town council meeting that officer Michael Herschell will be leaving the Upland Police Department by Feb. 23.

Herschell has served in Upland for a year and a half. He said the best part of being in Upland has been building relationships.

“I really got to know the community,” he said. “And it's a great, small community.”

Leaving was bitter-sweet, he said. He will serve at the Sheridan Police Department in Hamilton County, Indiana, where he hopes to have more opportunities to help people. He will also continue to advance his training.

Officer Michael Herschell is a kind and generous person, Cassidy said. He was always willing to help out in any situation.

“We wish him well as he transitions to a new chapter in his police career at the Sheridan Police Department,” Cassidy said. “Officer Herschell will most certainly be missed by the Town of Upland.”

The Upland Police Department is in the process of looking to fill in Herschell’s position. Herschell said these are tough times to be a police officer, but it is worth it.

“I can go home every night and know I did the right thing — helping people,” he said. “If you're from Grant County and you want to serve a small community, you can really get to know the people and help them out… It's a good career.”

He encouraged people who are interested in serving their community in this way to contact the Upland Police Department.
