Taking a vacant spot on Muncie’s busy McGalliard Road, Parlor Donuts brings the simplicity and comfort of flavors that patrons know and love, elevating them with new recipes.
I visited Parlor Donuts on a Saturday afternoon, and was pleasantly surprised to find that the people in my group were the only ones in the shop. The renovated space is decorated in their signature white and blue, adding an elevated class and cleanliness to the atmosphere. Upon entering the store, my group was kindly greeted by multiple employees, ready to assist us with our choices.
Parlor Donuts’ signature is a “layered” doughnut, which is airy on the inside and reminiscent of a croissant. Yet, while being light, the doughnuts are not oily or overly rich in any sense of the word.
I opted for the chocolate chocolate option, which is simply chocolate sauce and chocolate chips on a classic layered doughnut. Served on porcelain dishes, these are the types of doughnuts you will need a napkin for.
Junior Kaylyn Gates, sophomore Adalyn Downing and freshman Emma Scarbrough accompanied me, each opting for one of the doughnuts to accompany their dietary restrictions. Downing and Scarbrough ordered their doughnuts to be made vegan while Gates opted for the gluten-free option.
Of our group, my doughnut was the largest and least expensive, because it was not made to order and did not satisfy any dietary restrictions. Because all allergy friendly options are made to order, they took quite a bit longer than the normal doughnuts, which are ready to be served at the counter immediately after ordering.
In addition to their doughnuts, Parlor Donuts also has an array of breakfast items like avocado toast, açai bowls, breakfast sandwiches and breakfast tacos.
Parlor Donuts also has a variety of drink options — from specialty, seasonal coffee to refreshing cold brew, matcha, juices and kombucha. I opted for the hibiscus iced tea — a fruity, slightly sour drink with a beautiful pink hue. It was the perfect balance for my doubly sweet doughnut.
My visit to Parlor Donuts was better than I could have hoped. By far, these are the best doughnuts I’ve had in an extremely long time. I also appreciated the inclusion of gluten and dairy free options so I can go with any and all of my friends.
