In life, the best things are worth waiting for. Like deep friendships, endurance and cheese, the process takes time, but the outcome is worth it. For studio art majors, this is very much the truth. They work diligently for four years, using their creative minds to portray their emotions through art. The culmination of their efforts is the Senior Studio Art Exhibit, where students display their best work from the past year.
This year, the exhibit will be today from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Metcalf Gallery. The show will feature artwork from senior studio art majors Caitlyn Kuhn, Christi Dithrich, Hannah Hepler, Stephanie Hinshaw, Leah Kanuchok, Naphtalee Stutzman and Kyndra Roberson. These artists have been working on what will be displayed in this show for some time. Many have been preparing since spring of last school year, and they have been thinking about it for even longer.
"I've been looking forward to this show since freshman year for one reason: I knew everyone I got close to in my college career would come back to celebrate with me and look back at how far we've come," said Kanuchok.
The work in the senior show begs a much deeper look than simply aesthetically-intriguing art would. It contains emotions these artists were able to translate into physical pieces. Both two and three-dimensional work will be featured. Much of the art investigates space between functional and dysfunctional objects. Pieces range from objects like imaginative formal dresses to abstract staircases. The artists in this show had a lot of freedom in choosing what they displayed, so each piece featured is what they feel is their absolute best.
Art majors are continually creating and designing, bu they are rarely able to participate in a show honoring the unique work they invested so much time into. For the studio art majors, their time has finally come.
"Students come in and ask questions, and we are able to give back our knowledge and passion for art," said Kuhn, who is excited to see her work shown.
As fellow peers of these artists, let us join them in celebrating their hard work in a evening of beautiful art, meaningful conversation and refreshments Friday, April 11 in the Metcalf Gallery from 7 to 10 pm.
