Taylor students do a great job supporting their fellow classmates' interests and God-given gifts by attending sports games and concerts. But what about artists? Where can art lovers, majors and non-majors alike, share their talents with the Taylor community at large?
Students will be able to present their work at the All-Student Art Exhibit on Sunday, Feb. 16, at 6 p.m. in the Metcalf Gallery. Admission is free, so all students should stop by the exhibit and take a look at what Taylor's students are capable of creating.
The exhibit is a special event that allows any enrolled Taylor student to enter their work. Each year, a different jury from the outside community comes in and hand-selects which pieces of artwork will be exhibited. Although this is an intimidating part of entering, those who are brave enough to enter have the chance to win prizes and have their artwork purchased by potential buyers.
If their piece gets picked, students also receive the opportunity to share their work with whomever stops by the exhibit. This year, Henrick Soderstrom, an art professor from Indiana Wesleyan University, will be choosing the exhibit pieces.
The exhibit will be showcasing many different types of art, including photography, graphic design, 2D and 3D design. There will also be a public presentation of awards and prizes. The biggest prizes include $350 for Best of Show and $1,000 for the Haines Purchase Prize.
This will be a night for the rest of the aspiring artists and supportive viewers to experience the raw talent flowing through so much of Taylor's campus.
Hannah Guske, a sophomore graphic design major, is one supportive viewer. "I love the art show because it gives non-art students the chance to show their talent and work," she said. "It is also a great opportunity for art majors to show works they are proud of . . . to show off some things we work on outside of class and in our free time."
Be sure to stop by the Metcalf Gallery on Sunday night, Feb. 16, for food, refreshments and art appreciation.
