The Taylor University women's cross country team and two members of the men's cross country team had strong showings at the NAIA National Championships over Thanksgiving weekend.
The women's team finished 10th overall, recording the best season in program history, while juniors Scott King and Ethan Evans of the men's team placed 157th and 169th respectfully.
With a time of 95:08, the women's team easily topped the program's past team best of 20th at NAIA Nationals in 1992. Taylor shaved 14 seconds off its previous time on the same course during NAIA Pre-Nationals on Oct. 12.
"We were very excited, yet calm," said head coach Quinn White. "And that is the best way to handle any championship-type competition. We had a great demeanor going into this race."
The Trojans were lead by junior Allison Steinbeck, who set the best individual time for a Trojan at Nationals since Lolly York placed fourth in 2006. Finishing 36th with a time of 18:38, Steinbeck was closely followed by freshman Hannah Schroder, who placed 43rd with a time of 18:44.
Also showing strong performances for the Trojans in the 319-runner competition was sophomore Jane Hawks (91st) with a time of 19:10, junior Jenna Norris (105th) at 19:14, and junior Elaine Schmeltz (115th) at 19:20.
The finishes by Steinbeck and Schroder were recorded as the first time in Taylor history that two individuals placed among the top-50 at the NAIA National Championships. With the addition of Hawks, the three times were recorded as the first time three individuals had placed among the top-100. Overall, the team time was the third-fastest in TU history. When asked about express the pride he has in his team, White was nearly speechless.
"I don't even know how to say it." White said. "I am extremely blessed to have to opportunity to coach these dynamic ladies who want to use their talent to the maximum. This was a remarkable season. It can be a catalyst for next season."
Throughout the 2013 campaign, the team recorded the four-best team times and five of the top-10 team times in program history. The Trojans will end the season with a Crossroads League Championship, The NAIA Great Lakes Invite Championship, and a record of 110-13. The Trojans look to move forward next season
"After experiencing this year's national meet it will be our goal to improve upon this year's place," White said. "If we can stay healthy, we will be able to maximize our gifts."
All runners will return for the 2014 season, with only senior Tanya Rodgers graduating this spring.
