Men's soccer still looking for first win

Adam Kelly | Echo

The Taylor men's soccer team could not recover from an early deficit against Wheaton College Saturday, ending in a 5-0 defeat for the Trojans.

The soccer team came in with a tie on Friday against Augustana but was unable to put a win in the books against the Thunder. Wheaton played well behind a hat trick from sophomore forward Stephen Golz.

The Thunder put the pressure on the Trojan goalkeepers with 20 shots and nine on target over the course of the game. Taylor was able to take nine shots but only one on goal, making it difficult to put one in the net.

With a 3-0 lead at halftime, Wheaton put two more into the net in the second half to ensure the win against the Trojans.

Junior forward Adam Blackman started the scoring for the Thunder with a goal two minutes into the match. Defenseman Noah Anthony scored one at 11 minutes, followed by the first for Golz at 34 minutes. Golz added his second at 69 minutes and his final goal at 90.

Kevin Miller and Kyle Carr both received yellow cards for the Trojans at 60 and 69 minutes, respectively.

The Trojans suffered a host of injuries that could be a difficult bump in the road for both the near future and the rest of the season. Senior defender Ryan Beachler suffered a broken ankle while a few other key players came down with more minor injuries.

Taylor continues looking for their first win of the season with a non-conference match against Campbellsville at a neutral site this Friday at 5:00 p.m.
