The Taylor men's golf team finished sixth out of 10 teams in the IWU Fall Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at the Meshingomesia Country Club in Marion. The Trojans struggled the first day, shooting a team combined 318, but they bounced back on Tuesday with an improved score of 310. Four of the five Trojan golfers shot a better round on day two.
"We were better today but we still weren't very good," said head coach Cameron Andry. "We need to get better but we understand this is a process and we'll continue to work hard."
Senior Brandon Tereshko and junior Nate Scheibe led the Trojans with a two-day total of 153 each. Tereshko came into the clubhouse with a 78, 75, hitting 16 greens in regulation on the final day, while Scheibe recorded a 77, 76. Both Tereshko and Scheibe tied for ninth in the overall field.
"There were definitely glimpses of some good play, but all in all I feel like we have a lot to improve on going forward," Tereshko said. "Nobody was satisfied with the way they played, which means we will work harder in the coming weeks to get better."
Freshman Nathan Edwards tied for 16th in the individual scoring as he shot a 77, 78 for a two day total of 155. Other Trojans competing in the individual scoring were freshmen Jordan Hall (79, 85) and Maclendon Aiken (86, 94).
Indiana Wesleyan claimed the top spot in their invitational with an overall score of 602 (302, 300) followed by Grand Rapids Community College who took second with a 606. Bethel claimed third, carding a 614.
Mount Vernon Nazarene and Spring Arbor both defeated Taylor to take the fifth and sixth spots. Grace College's Trey Stoll carded the lowest score of the two days with a 1-over par 145 (74, 71).
"I think everyone, especially the freshmen, gained some valuable experience that we will build on going forward," Tereshko said. "We have another tournament coming up this weekend so hopefully we can perform a little better and gain some confidence going forward."
The Trojans will be back on the course this Friday when the team travels to South Bend, Ind., to play Blackthorn Country Club for the Battle at Blackthorn hosted by Bethel College.
