The Taylor University golf season is just around the corner as the teams prepare for their season kickoff in the next few weeks.
The men's first meet this weekend was canceled, but they will now open their season at Old Hickory Country Club in Tennessee on March 25. The Indiana Wesleyan Spring Warm-Up will jump start the women's golf season a week from Saturday.Men's golf head coach Cam Andry started the women's golf team as an addition to the athletic department this past fall, but, with only three members, they competed as individuals since they did not have enough for a full team. This spring the women added two seniors, Jenna Fahlen and Hope Knowling, to complete the team.
"I'm very excited that we have enough girls for a full team," said sophomore Meagan Devries. "I think that this semester we will have a lot more competition in practice and gain more experience. Having an extra person on board is such a relief."
Both teams travel to Muncie three times a week for practices. In the cold season, they take advantage of a heated, indoor driving range in Muncie called MD's. As the weather provides, they will then practice regularly at The Player's Club golf course in Muncie each week.
"I think that this team could be the best one Taylor has seen yet," said senior Jimmy Fahlen. "Last spring, we won our first tournament ever since 2004, and we can only improve from there."
Both golf teams have plans for spring break. The men will travel to Tennessee for their first tournament. Then they will travel to Wesley Chapel, Fla., for practice together and team bonding activities. The women will compete in Kentucky the first weekend of break, then travel to Florida as well for team practice, bonding and workouts.
With the men's hard work and success last season, they are ready to take on the competition this spring. The women will finally be able to compete as a team with the added seniors.
"It was a last minute decision to join the team, but I am so grateful that Cam and the girls allowed me to join so late," Knowling said. "I'm just very excited to have the opportunity to play golf my last couple months at Taylor."
