Records broke at nationals, Carey; All-American

By Gabe Bain

The Trojans sent 12 athletes to compete at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships this past weekend in Geneva, Ohio.

The three-day event brought some success for the Taylor track team as records were broken and honors were awarded.

On the first day of the even two records were broken, both by relay teams. The distance medley team, which consists of freshman Jane Hawks and sophomores Kaitlin DeHaan, Jenna Norris, and Elaine Schmeltz, broke a Taylor record with a time of 12:28.28 which was good enough for a 12th place finish.

The 4x800 team of junior Erin Price, sophomore Sarah Neideck and freshmen Grace Carver and Sarina Oleson finished 17th. They also broke a Taylor record with a time of 9:34.16.

Senior Henrietta Carey also had some success competing in the 60-meter dash. She broke the school record in the semifinals with a time of 7.64. In the finals she finished seventh with a time of 7.67. The finish was good enough for her to earn All-American honors.

Sophomore Kenny Higgins finished 13th in the men's weight toss, finishing with a distance of 16.52m. Junior Luke Currens finished the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.29, which was good enough for him to place 14th in the semifinal round.

Freshman Brandan Wilchcombe did not make it out of the preliminaries in the 60-meter hurdles but was able to finish 14th in the semifinal round of the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.96.

The outdoor track season will begin on March 23 for the Rhodes College Invitational in Memphis Tennessee.
