New students arriving on campus enter a community that merges tradition with innovation. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the spotlight. Many of Taylor's most cherished traditions revolve around the performing arts, shaped by the talents of each new class. Here are Taylor's top three annual performances, hosted by Taylor Student Organization.
Airband Airband is most accurately described as a campus-wide lip-synching and choreographed dance competition. This event is regionally known, drawing crowds who often wait more than three hours in line for a front row seat. Airband auditions are cutthroat, resulting in action-packed entertainment.
My Gen Night During My Generation (MyGen) Night, students reminisce about songs they grew up listening to. Live bands bring together students of all disciplines - from chemistry to social work - who showcase their musical talents. Selections range from Backstreet Boys to Rihanna.
Nostalgia Night Nostalgia Night reverses the confines of MyGen. Students perform classics that are at least 20 years old, bringing back sounds of primitive electric guitars and swinging saxophones. "Boogie-woogie" from the Andrews Sisters may ring from the microphone, followed by the acoustic vocals of James Taylor. These covers are routinely authentic, even though none of the performers were alive to hear the originals.
Taylor's top three are a great opportunity for students to step into the spotlight while shaping Taylor culture. These events remain popular year-in and year-out among students, faculty and community members. They form the backdrop for family reunions, spur creativity and self-expression among students, and bring everything together into the timeless collection of Taylor traditions.
