Taylor students appreciate Grandparents

By Olivia Jessup | Echo

It's that time of year again: Heritage Weekend, when students have the chance to look back at their family and Taylor heritage. The weekend kicks off with Grandparents Day today as hundreds of alumni and family members flood campus to celebrate the history of the university as well as the students.

With this year's theme of servant leadership in mind, this weekend offers many events for students, alumni, and family members. Today is a unique opportunity for Taylor students to let their grandparents see what life is like at Taylor. Grandparents will have the opportunity to go to chapel and classes with their grandchildren. Including and celebrating grandparents in their lives is something that matters to many students. One such student is freshman Meredith Touby.

"I love my grandparents," Touby said. "They love that feeling of being a part of your life now, include them in what's going on. It's fun for them to see where we are and what we do."

Although it can be challenging to sometimes stay in contact with grandparents while in college, students still find ways to communicate with their older relatives. Senior Christine Orr writes letters to her grandparents, and occasionally sends them pictures through email.

Not all families can make it to Upland for Grandparent's Day, but students who don't have family in attendance still find the weekend entertaining. Joshua Key, whose grandparents have never been able to make it, said he thinks it's great for other students, whose grandparents can.

Other events on Friday include the Taylor Writing Center Writing Walls, the Graphic Design Senior Student Art Exhibit and a concert from the Taylor Chorale and Sounds. Grandparents will have the opportunity to attend classes, take a tour of campus and hear from Taylor administrators.

Take some time to appreciate your grandparents this weekend and if they can't make it to Taylor, send some love back home to them.
