Syria has continued to suffer the effects of a violent civil war that has lasted four years and shows no signs of ending. President Bashar al-Assad will come to the end of his term this summer, prompting president elections planned for July. The West has denounced this show of democracy as invalid, as the opposition likely has no chance of challenging Assad politically. Meanwhile, a diverse collection of opposition groups continues to use military force to accomplish the overthrow of Assad.
