The Indiana experience

By Olivia Jessup | Echo

If you've ever had the breaded tenderloin at Ivanhoe's then you may have experienced some of the best of Indiana, according to the Huffington Post.

Huff Post recently posted an article detailing the top "must do" experience in each state across the U.S as decided by the editors of the news organization. There was a wide range of activities to try, covering everything from state parks to pizza.

For Indiana, it was none other than Upland's very own Ivanhoe's that made the list. The article recommended trying the tenderloin with one of the 100 possible shakes and sundaes for the total Midwest experience.

"We were shocked and very excited about it. It's an honor, being named as the place to go to in Indiana," said Mark Souers, general manager of Ivanhoe's. "We didn't know we were that popular."

Souers noted that, with this recommendation in particular, they expect a busy summer. The restaurant's goal? To give everyone the true Ivanhoe's treatment.

"We want to thank Taylor and Taylor students, past and present, and the community," Souers said. "It's everybody that talks about Ivanhoe's that makes it popular, not just us. It's the community and the student body at Taylor, whether it's past or present, that we feel like has helped make us this known."

Taylor students were pleasantly surprised by this news, agreeing that it was a fascinating nod to this small town that is often taken for granted.

"Thinking of Indiana as a whole, it sounds a little specific, kind of out of the blue, Ivanhoe's in Upland, Ind., but it's cool. It's a nice little spotlight," said MAHE student Jon McIlvaine.

Junior Malinda Hall noted that it was almost humorous, since many Ivanhoe's is so common for both the community and for Taylor students.

"It's kind of funny to hear, since it's right there and it's an everyday occurrence to us, but to think that people would come to Indiana to visit an ice cream shop that's down the road, it's kind of weird but . . . cool," Hall said.

Ivanhoe's is located on Main Street and is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays, and on Fridays and Saturdays the shop is open to 11 p.m, with Sunday's hours going from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. The restaurant's springtime strawberry shortcake sundae returns March 15.
