Do’s and Don’ts of Silent Night

By Gracie Fairfax | Echo

It's that time of year again, folks. A time to celebrate Christmas and the wrapping up of classes, to channel your creativity and unleash the screams you've wanted to unleash on your professors all week. While some refer to Silent Night as the greatest tradition in college basketball, remember, in reality, it is the most rewarding and thrilling group therapy session you have ever attended.

To best prepare, allow me to introduce to you the do's and don'ts of this festive affair.

Do's:

1. Wear clothing

While many men believe "dressing up" means "dressing down," I am here to tell you, it does not. Wear footie pajamas, nightgowns, banana or gorilla suits. Go crazy with your outfit, but for the sake of your fellow students-wear clothes, not the gold speedo you've had in your top drawer all year.

2. Wear something that lights up

While some may say you are too flashy, don't believe them-the more attention, the better. This is not a night to be subtle. If you have a plastic bling star necklace that flashes like a strobe light, put it on and never take it off.

3. Be creative

Everyone has seen footie pajamas, but nobody has seen an authentic candle costume complete with real wax and a real flame. While it may sound high risk in terms of safety, it's definitely low risk in the "that stranger is matching me" department.

4. Stay Hydrated

Students have been known to pass out at functions this time of year-especially when the temperature rises in people-packed venues. While this should not alarm you, remember the saying "hydrate or die."

5. Get a picture with the Habeckers at Hollapalooza

On this cold winter night, the first family will walk among us, wearing PJs. Do not miss the opportunity to snag a picture with Taylor's classiest couple clad in their finest linens. It may even make a great profile picture for your LinkedIn account.

Don'ts:

1. Be too cool for school

Silent Night is an opportunity to channel your inner child. While you may think your jeans and t-shirt will keep you from standing out, you will stand out because you look lame when everyone else is looking their Christmas best. Don't be that freshman-you will learn the hard way.

2. Skip this event

Even if you're a senior and you think it would be better to stay in and watch "How I Met Your Mother" on Netflix, Silent Night is still relevant and completely necessary to your life. Put on your pajamas and head to the KSAC.

3. Stay silent after the 10th point is scored

The chaos should not cease. If there is any day to channel your inner psychopath, today is the day. Really, dress up like a pig and go hog wild.

4. Make the other team feel comfortable

Taylor's advantage in this game is that the other team is confused and unprepared for the mental game that awaits them. Keep it that way.

5. Stop Believing

While the formula for Silent Night is sure to render success, keep the pep going and help lead our team to victory.

No matter if you're a freshman, senior, geek or jock, these tips are sure to apply to your Silent Night group therapy experience. It may even help you avoid the biggest embarrassment of your college career.
